Celebrating Democracy Day: A Message from Rt. Hon. Barr. Sunday Cyriacus Umeha

My Dear Constituents and Fellow Nigerians,

Celebrating 25 years of unbroken democracy is a significant milestone in our nation’s history. This achievement is a testament to our collective commitment to nation-building and is certainly worthy of celebration.

While we enjoy the benefits of democracy today, we must not forget the sacrifices of our past heroes who fought for the freedoms we now cherish, particularly the right to change our government through the ballot box—a cornerstone of democratic governance.

I pay tribute to Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawole Abiola, GCFR, and his wife, Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, who gave their lives for the restoration of a government by the people and for the people. We also honor Pa Alfred Rewane, Alhaji Shehu Yar’Adua, Chief Chukwuemeka Ezeife, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, and the many pro-democracy activists whose efforts have sustained our democratic culture for 25 years.

While opinions vary on whether the gains of democracy have been fully realized, there is a consensus that democracy remains our most cherished and sustainable system of government. Despite its challenges, democracy offers each of us the opportunity to participate in the governance process, reflecting our shared destiny as citizens of one nation.

Though our journey is not without its challenges, we must remain hopeful and united, drawing strength from our collective resolve to overcome them. Together, we can build a nation that fulfills our shared aspirations for future generations.

On behalf of the good people of Ezeagu/Udi Federal Constituency, I wish us all a Happy Democracy Day.

Signed,
Rt. Hon. Barr. Sunday Cyriacus Umeha
