President Bola Tinubu has appealed to Nigerians to postpone the planned protests against bad governance scheduled for next month.
The plea was conveyed by Information Minister Mohammed Idris, who addressed State House correspondents after a meeting with the President on Tuesday.
Idris stated that Tinubu urged the protest organizers to hold off on their plans and wait for the government’s response to their grievances.
“The President believes there is no need for the protest. He has asked them to suspend the plan and await the government’s response to their concerns,” the minister said.
The protest, aimed at highlighting economic hardships, has been gaining support on social media and is set to take place across all states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, starting from August 1.
The prices of food and basic commodities have surged in recent months. Many Nigerians are facing one of the country’s worst inflation and economic crises, exacerbated by the government’s policies of petrol subsidy removal and the unification of forex windows.
