A senior officer of the Nigerian Customs Service passed away at the National Assembly clinic in Abuja while attending an investigative hearing by the House of Representatives.
The incident occurred as the officer, whose identity is being withheld, was responding to questions from the Public Account Committee regarding revenue-generating agencies and government parastatals.
According to a statement from the House spokesperson, Akin Rotimi, the officer experienced sudden health complications around 1:00 pm on Tuesday, June 25, 2024. Despite immediate medical attention at the National Assembly clinic, he unfortunately did not survive.
“The House of Representatives confirms with deep sadness the passing of an esteemed official of the Nigeria Customs Service during an engagement with a House Committee,” the statement read.
In respect for the deceased officer’s family, his name has not been disclosed at this time. The House extended its condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues, acknowledging his significant contributions to the nation through his service.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas expressed sorrow over the loss, stating, “We are deeply saddened by the sudden loss of a dedicated public servant. Our hearts go out to his family during this difficult time.”
The House assured cooperation with relevant authorities to understand the circumstances of the incident and ensure necessary protocols are followed.
