Alex Iwobi deletes almost all his Instagram posts after facing severe backlash over AFCON loss

The Super Eagles midfielder, Alex Iwobi, has pulled down all the pictures on his official Instagram page.

It was discovered on Monday afternoon during a quick check on his Instagram page.

Iwobi is the target of internet troll and banter and one of the players who came under criticism following Nigeria’s 2-1 defeat to Ivory Coast in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final on Sunday.

The Super Eagles entered the AFCON with high hopes and expectations, buoyed by a talented squad and a strong run of form in the qualifiers. However, their campaign quickly turned sour as they struggled to find their rhythm on the pitch. Despite flashes of brilliance in the group stage, including a thrilling victory over Egypt, Nigeria’s performances lacked consistency and cohesion.

The loss sent shockwaves through the Nigerian footballing community and prompted widespread criticism of the team’s tactics, mentality, and individual performances. Iwobi, in particular, came under scrutiny for his subdued displays and perceived lack of impact in key moments.

The team has been castigated by analysts and fans for its woeful and lacklustre performance during the match.

The Fulham midfielder played for 79 minutes as the Eagles failed to add to their three AFCON titles.

He was replaced by Alhassan Yusuf for the final 10 minutes of the game

Alex Iwobi’s decision to delete all pictures on his Instagram page following Nigeria’s AFCON debacle has sparked significant debate and speculation. Whether seen as a symbolic gesture of accountability or a reactionary move driven by frustration, it underscores the complex relationship between athletes, social media, and public perception. As the Super Eagles lick their wounds and regroup for future challenges, it’s essential to remember that true resilience and growth come from facing adversity head-on, both on and off the pitch.
