In a show of solidarity with workers across Benue State, the Amalgamated Union Of App-Based Transporters Of Nigeria (AUATON) actively participated in the 2024 May Day (Workers Day) celebration at the IBB square in Makurdi. The event was graced by the esteemed presence of Governor Rev (Dr.) Hyacinth Iormen Alia and his Deputy, Barr. Dr. Sam Ode mni.
Upon the governor’s arrival, the Chairman, accompanied by the secretary and representatives from sister unions, extended a warm welcome.
During the event, the NLC Benue State Chairman, Comr. Terungwa Igbe, expressed gratitude to Governor Alia and his administration for their efforts in improving the welfare of workers in Benue state. He highlighted significant strides made in rejuvenating the Benue civil service system and addressing long-standing issues such as salary delays, pension arrears, and promotion stagnation.
Comr. Igbe conveyed his satisfaction with Governor Alia’s administration, describing it as the “discharge of Benue workers from their figurative Intensive Care Unit.”
In response, Governor Alia expressed delight in commemorating May Day alongside the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC). As a gesture of appreciation, he generously gifted the unions the sum of N15,000,000 (fifteen million naira) and invited the union leadership for lunch at his residence, an invitation graciously accepted by the unions.
The AUATON Benue State Chapter reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of all E-hailing Workers in Benue state, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts in safeguarding workers’ interests.
